Looking back over the last few months of working as a photographer here in Mallorca, I've realised that I've been hired to do quite a few portrait sessions for entrepreneurs looking to communicate online and sell their services. What is really exciting to me is that none of them have wanted to look too "traditional" so we've had the chance to let our creative juices flow as we've worked on different looks.
What you present online is really important, and the image you present has to be consistent as well: it's recommended that you use the same image of yourself across the various social media platforms as it makes you easily recognisable. Well, you don't really want that image to be out of date or out of focus do you?
There are some questions you can ask yourself if you are thinking of getting some shots for your own professional image.
- What do you want to say about yourself?
- How do you want to make the viewer feel?
- What story are you telling?
- How are you going to use the images?
- What captions will you use for the images?
You should work with your photographer, or if you are working with me, we will have already had a conversation before hand about how you want to appear. If you have some concerns about anything then it's good to talk about them upfront so that we can know if there are certain poses or situations to avoid or include.
Think about what you are going to wear, where you want to be in the photos (inside, outside, your workplace, somewhere neutral, the beach?), make sure that you feel really as comfortable in your skin as you possibly can: get your hair done if you need it, does your skin look good? The night before your shoot make sure you get some sleep, drink plenty of water to hydrate yourself, and prepare your outfits (plural, always take a couple of different tops that you can change to give yourself some options).
Almost everyone who is not a professional model dislikes having their photograph taken: we aren't comfortable with how we look, we don't want to appear vain, AND we don't like to have our photo taken in front of others. Maybe you are a "blinker" and always have your eyes shut in every single photo you've ever had taken, well now imagine that you have a photographer JUST FOR YOU to take your photo and get that killer shot. Orchestrate the best setting for yourself so that you can feel as confident and relaxed as possible.
PSSST: there is such a thing as "Retouching" (i.e. Photoshop) which although it won't magically transform you into a Vogue model can make your eyes and teeth whiter, your stomach flatter and remove some grey hairs if need be. Ask your photographer if they offer Retouch services and how much they will be. Most do it.
Don't Forget: the reason you are having the photographs taken is to help you to sell your services, stop thinking that it is arrogant to need to have professional photos taken. It will help you to project a good image to your potential clients, so stop stressing about it, book a photographer that you get along with and feel confident in, and get to it!
You never know, you may even start to enjoy it.....
Thanks to all of my clients for their support in 2018! I'm looking forward to seeing your businesses grow and grow!
