Back in the day, when I was a bump in my mum’s tummy, there was no such thing as maternity shoots. Photos of pregnant ladies was just silliness. My mother in law mentioned this to me recently as if she’d never heard of anything so crazy, but you know what, when I was pregnant, 13 years ago, my husband and I did a shoot which we planned meticulously. The photos were amazing and then we didn’t get around to printing them and the flipping hard drive broke, so I don’t have any photos of me and my belly. I wish that I did. Which I guess is why I love doing maternity shoots. There’s so much love and anticipation, so much beauty (even when the mum probably isn’t feeling THAT beautiful because of the inevitable “cankles” and a few extra lbs), and it’s the beginning of a new era.
But the key though, in my opinion, is to organise your shoot to suit you. There are a lot of different ways to have your portrait taken. This set are of one of my brides from last year, the lovely (and hilarious) Jessica, and her husband Ben. When she announced to me that she was pregnant I almost instantly fell upon an idea which I thought she might like to do… a funny shoot echoing her Scouse roots, plus of course some more thoughtful and beautiful shots as well. Lucky for me, Jess was up for it and we went about finding a venue where we could shoot. The good people at Nice Price in Portals were happy to lend us their freezer section, and then for the second half we went down to Camp de Mar at sunset, stripped off, and submerged ourselves in the sea!
I love as well the fact that we can show so many different sides of a woman, the fun side, her humour, passion, thoughtfulness, love and sensitivity towards her husband, it is all there in these images. We did well. Next! Baby photos!
The second half of the shoot was just as much fun to be honest. Ben is quite camera shy and didn’t really want to go in the sea, but we managed to get him in some shots!
